A Sailor and a Horsewoman.

Can a sailor and a horsewoman live under the same roof? Surely they come from two different worlds. They can’t even agree on something as simple as calling a rope a line or a line a rope.

The pull of a line as the sail fills with the wind.

The pull of a rein as the horse asks to run with the wind.

The quite slap of water hitting hull.

The quite thud of hoof hitting dirt.

The creak of wood.

The creak of leather.

The smell of a breeze crossing water.

The smell of horse and leather.

The taste of salt in the air.

The taste of salty sweat as you muck a stall.

Spring in full bloom on the shore.

Spring blooming underfoot.

The fall colors mirrored on still water.

The fall colors enhanced with the earthy smell of wet leaves.

Dolphins swimming alongside and laughing up at you.

Deer grazing unafraid of you.

Ice frozen to the mizzen line or halyard.

Ice frozen to your horses whiskers.

The joy of seeing you sailboat bobbing at moor waiting for you.

The joy of a horse’s welcoming neigh when you enter the stable.

But yet maybe not quite so different in what the individual receives while participating in their chosen passion.

The quiet pleasure of communing with nature without the interference of noisy motors.

The slow release of tension.

The quiet solitude that encourages daydreams and allows time for introspection.

The feeling of connecting with proceeding generations.

The desire to share with the next generation

The ahh feeling that one will survive the hectic pace of the world as long as the sanctuary of this moment can be found when needed.

Dad, seems like you did connect with the next generation. Perhaps I find my joy a little differently, but yet we find the same joy.

Yes, a sailor and a horsewoman can live under the same roof.

Love, Sharon
