With a degree in agricultural engineering from Michigan State University, Monte Alkire was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1964 and a Vietnam veteran. He worked as development engineer and quality manager for Caterpillar Inc. for over thirty years. He and his wife have three children and split their time between Illinois and Arizona.
